25 Essential Commands for Linux Newbies

The terminal in Linux, and the need to use it, is a widely known fact, and one of the big reasons why Linux has earned the reputation of being harder to used compared to other commercial alternatives out there.

However, in my experience, Linux isn’t any more difficult to use than any other system. It’s just different. Yes, you will need to use the terminal. But, with a little practice, you can become an expert in the Linux terminal. Once you do, I believe you will find that in many ways using Linux is actually easier and faster compared to the other options out there.

What Is Linux?
At its most basic, Linux is an operating system, much like Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS. It was originally created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds when he became interested in UNIX based operating systems but became frustrated with licensing issues surrounding many operating systems of the time. Linux isn’t a port of UNIX per say, as it’s built from the ground up. But it does share many similarities to UNIX, thus coining the term UNIX-like operating system.

Today, Linux can be found in the form of distributions, created by different groups of people and companies. Some of the most popular distributions today are:

Because of its free and open source licensing policies, today tt powers a majority of the world’s servers, especially for the Internet. But it can also be found powering routers, switches, and even our televisions and many more devices.

The Linux Terminal
The Linux Shell, more often referred to as the Linux Terminal, is a text-based application designed to receive commands from the user and show the output of these commands. From here, you can completely control every aspect of your Linux operating system. While you still may have a graphical user interface for day-to-day tasks, chances are you will have to use the Terminal to properly administer your Linux operating system.

Essential Linux Commands
Now that you understand exactly what the Linux Shell or the Linux Terminal actually is, let’s take a look at 25 essential commands that you will need to know when you start using Linux.

1. clear

When you are working in your terminal, the output can fill up your terminal window. By executing the clear command, you can clear your terminal window of all that added output that you don’t need and start with a fresh, empty terminal window.

How to get detailed information of running processes in Windows?

When using default task manager, one can do pretty much all the things needed. But there are times when you just want to know some more about a process or need some more details that default task manager can't provide. To solve this problem or to give this extra advantage, there is an application named process manager. One can get various information of the system and processes using this tool.

From where should download this application?
You can search this application on any search engine or you can simply go to this website and download it for free.

What can I do with this application?
Well, you can do everything that default task manager do plus there is a bonus of more information. By using this application, you can see the list of current running processes. You can decide which to keep and which to kill. Moreover, you can see detailed information of what DLL a process using or which particular handles are opened by a process. There are two panes, upper pane show list of processes running while lower pane shows DLL or handles used by that particular process. In a simple way if you want to pinpoint a particular DLL and which process is using that DLL, you can do it with this application. Good thing about this application is that there is an option to replace it with default task manager, so you can always open it using default ctrl+alt+del combo.

Peppermint OS explained

In the childhood many of us must have eaten peppermint tablets. Well, just the name gives us some nostalgic moments. So today on the 12th segment of "Introduction with Linux Distro" we are having Peppermint OS as our guest. Peppermint OS is a lightweight option for those with old machines or those who loves fast and light OS.
6 years ago on May 2010 developer team of Peppermint OS released their first version of distribution. Peppermint OS is based on Ubuntu. The latest release is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. So, let's get some more information of Peppermint.
  • Compatibility : Peppermint OS is compatible with older 32 bit machines as well as newer 64 bit machines. This gives a little relief to 32 bit users. While many distro are shifting to 64 bit only, Peppermint still supporting 32 bit also. (but we suggest to upgrade to newr 64 bit machines)
  • Beauty & Desktop Environment : Peppermint is beautiful in it's own way. It provide minimal experience but also gives good looks. Peppermint uses Lxde as default desktop environment, but there is a little twist in latest version. It uses Xfwm4 window manager and Xfce bottom panel on top of Lxde.

  • Lightweight & Speed Demon : Peppermint uses Lxde, it is well known for it's lightweight nature. While delivering the lightweight desktop environment, Lxde is actually blazing fast in what it does. This makes an ideal choice for old machines and speed lovers.
  • Customization : Peppermint can be customized heavily. It includes various themes and window manager can also be customized. It includes an application named Firefox themer which can force Firefox to white theme or use default system themes.
    Peppermint 7
  • Love Between Cloud & Desktop : Peppermint is somewhat unique than other Linux distro. It has successfully made an hybrid environment with cloud and desktop applications. Peppermint provides custom made Ice applications for many task, so one does not necessarily need to have local application for doing this and that. The custom Ice applications allows users to do work in site specific browsers aka. SSB's. This makes it more efficient as one don't have to open a browser everytime, instead of that Peppermint makes a different dedicated browser window for every task. It works well with Chromium and Firefox and makes every cloud based task easier for users.

  • Ubuntu base : We all know that Ubuntu is one of the fastest growing Linux distribution. By being based on Ubuntu peppermint gets advantage of utilizing Ubuntu's repositories and also providing their homemade recipes. Peppermint 7 is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS which also makes it a long term support distro. While you can do most of things using SSB's, you can also install native applications for doing tasks.

  • The Philosophy : Peppermint team has somewhat same philosophy as us. They are also trying to erase the confusion and misconception of users about Linux. Their aim is to relieve the fear of a normal user towards Linux and provide them an easy to use Linux distribution.
Peppermint team is constantly providing updates and new features from the first version. This makes them a strong player in Linux world. With a pure philosophy and good development it is not hard for them to become primary operating system in many computers. So try out Peppermint OS and if you think it is cool and you can dual boot it or even make it your primary OS. This concludes our 12th segment of "Introduction with Linux Distro". We will be back with another cool Linux distribution in next segment. So keep visiting us and have fun with Linux.

Today on this 11th segment we are having Bodhi Linux as our guest. In last segment we told you that we will be introducing a beautiful Linux distro, so here it is. Bodhi Linux is beautiful from outside as well as inside.
Back in march 2011 Bodhi Linux has it's first initial release. After these 5 years Bodhi Linux is having 3.2.1 as latest version which is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Bodhi linux is well known for it's lightweight nature. Let's get to know few thing about Bodhi Linux.
  • Compatibility : Bodhi Linux is compatible with new 64 bit machines as well as older 32 bit and Non-PAE machines. You can simply install Bodhi Linux on workstations, netbooks, home pc, etc. There used to be a ARM based tablet version of Bodhi Linux but it was disconnected later.
  • Lightweight : Bodhi Linux is one of the best lightweight distributions available in the world. It is roughly around 500-550 mb in size. But even though it is lightweight, it provides all the necessary feature you want in your daily life.
  • Desktop Environment : At first Bodhi Linux was using Enlightenment desktop environment. But in Latest release 3.2.1 Bodhi started to use Moksha as their desktop environment. Moksha is a fork of Enlightenment.
    Bodhi Linux 3.2.1

    Bodhi Linux 3.2.1

  • Performance and Stability : Bodhi Linux is lightweight but in terms of performance it is as good as anything. It only needs 128 MB of ram along with 300 MHz processor to deliver a powerful performance. It works like a charm on 32 bit systems too. Bodhi Linux hardly need 3 GB of hard disk space. Bodhi Linux 3.2.1 uses Linux kernel 4.2. It is very stable as it looks.
  • Customization : Bodhi Linux is highly customizable. You can change from themes to fonts and everything. There is a dedicated settings panel for customizations.
    Bodhi Linux 3.2.1
These are just few reasons to think about Bodhi Linux. As it is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS it doesn't lacks in case of applications. There is an alpha release of Bodhi Linux which is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. This gives us another reason to think about Bodhi Linux. Try it out and make it permanent if you like it. Puppy Linux explained

Today is saturday, that means a new segment of  "Introduction with Linux Distro" series. In our last segment we gave a hint that we will be introducing another independent Linux distribution. So today, in this 10th segment we will be explaining about Puppy Linux.

Many of us know about Puppy Linux as one of the smallest Linux distributions and it is true. Back in june 2003 team behind this distribution released the first version of Puppy Linux. It is an independent Linux distribution. Let's see some important highlights of this distribution.
Take Time To Read:Help Us To Grow

    • Lightweight : Puppy Linux is incredibly lightweight. Being lightweight doesn't mean it lacks features. It includes lots of features that a full fledged Linux distribution offers. The latest release of Puppy Linux is Slacko 6.3 (which we are currently using to post this topic) is only 234 mb in size for 64 bit machines.
    • Live Medium : Puppy Linux is mainly used as live medium. There is no need to install Puppy in your PC. Just create a bootable usb and use it as a live medium anywhere you want. There is also an option to save your work before you shut down the session. This way you can work anywhere and have your work saved along with you.
      Puppy Linux Slacko 6.3
    • Fast,Easy and Robust : Puupy Linux is very easy to use and understand. It loads into your ram that makes it seriously fast. There aren't many lags, it works smoothly on any machine. While keeping all this in mind, Puupy Linux is also a robust distribution. Once you start using it you will get feel of it's powers. Puppy can be used in machines with no HDD or it can be used as rescue OS.
    • Desktop Environment : By default Puppy uses JWM as desktop environment but you can also get Enlightenment or Fluxbox via additional packages. Puppy need atleast 128 mb of ram and  8 mb of shared video memory to load and run smoothly.
      Puppy Linux Slacko 6.3
    • Package Management : Puppy Linux uses PET (Puppy Enhanced Tarball) as it's package management. Puupy includes many software by default which is useful in day-to-day work. If you need to do office work you will get basic appliations to do so in Puppy, you can browse internet or do various things in Puppy Linux. It is bundled nicely to provide out of the box service. If you need anything else then you can simply download and install additional packages.
      Puppy Linux Slacko 6.3
Well, these are just few things about Puppy Linux. There is lot more in it, why not giving it a try as live medium? Maybe you will like it and you can also make it your portable system to work on the go. This concludes our 10th segment. In our next segment we are going to introduce a beautiful Linux distribution. So stay tuned with us and have fun with Linux.
