Importance of Linux as daily driver

Hi guys, its been quite a time we haven't talked about some random things related to Linux world. We have been constantly giving news and reviews on different distributions and applications. So today we will just sit back, relax and talk about how Linux can be our best friend and be useful to us in our day to day life.

  • Dont Want to leave Windows?

We know you love your Windows system so much, we also love ours. We never encourage anyone to leave their existing operating system and getting out of your comfort zone. There is a thing called virtualbox, where you can use different operating system without disturbing your existing system. You can always try Linux in VM and if you feel it comfortable, then you can just make it your primary OS or you can also make it secondary OS via dual boot.
  • What is Linux useful for?

So what you can do with Linux? Pretty much everything you do with Windows. Now don't say 'can we play Overwatch in Linux?', that would be difficult for now. You can do all the important and non-important daily tasks with Linux. You can listen music , browse internet, fetch your mails, play games, perform more high level tasks, etc.
  • What About Security?

Don't worry, Linux is way more secure than you think it is. Unlike Windows, Linux provide much more secure and virus free environment to work on. Due to less users of Linux, may be virus creator don't think it is useful to create virus for Linux or they just can't. Apart from viruses, Linux takes security very seriously.
  • The Misconception.

Many people think, a Linux user is like a god level hacker or a big geek. But seriously this is not true always. One of our team member uses Linux just to do daily stuff while other one is geek :P Linux is very user friendly nowadays, it offers most of the stuff need for daily things prebuilt in system. Many times a user don't even need to install external applications for their need.
  • Is it even beautiful?

Linux is beautiful. Don't think there is only letters and numbers. Linux distributions are much more developed now. They can offer you the beauty you always wished for. Distributions like Elementary OS, Linux Deepin, Manjaro Linux, Solus, etc can make you mesmerize in the beauty they offer. There is also an option of customization and different desktop environment to choose from.
  • I am the Office guy!

Oh, you are a office guy and need to do all your office work on PC. Don't worry, Linux got you all covered. There are different choices of office suites to choose from. You can use most famous Libreoffice, Openoffice, King officesuite, etc to do all your office work. These suites also have Microsoft office compatibility so you can resume your work in office or in home.
  • Now i am a Studio freak!

You are interested in Multimedia stuff? Sure go on, you have lots of multimedia applications to use. There are many music and media players, There are various editors and pro level studio tools available like Gimp, Lightworks, Darktable, Inkscape, etc. All this stuff is free of cost.
Now just don't keep reading this post, try Linux. There are many distributions that offers newbie friendly environment for those who are much familiar to Windows. First of all try it in VM so you don't have to worry about your existing system. After that just dual boot or replace or do whatever you want with the system. There are plenty of  'how to install' tutorials on this site to take reference from. There is a festival going on in our city so we are going to participate while you guys can have fun with Linux.

Manjaro Linux receives update for new year.

Manajro Linux recently released a new version of operating system but they also keep their package updated. So some time ago Manjaro team updated some packages and introduced new features to main distribution. According to official announcement new feature called Brisk-menu is introduced in MATE edition of Manajro which is actually developed by Solus team. Thunderbird received some security update, linux48 will soon upgrade to linux49. Broadcom-wl, calamares, fightgear and few Ruby packages are updated.

OpenVPN is also updated to 2.4.0. There is a notice posted in official announcement for OpenVPN update.
OpenVPN 2.4.0 update may require administrative interaction
The upgrade to openvpn 2.4.0 makes changes that are incompatible with
previous configuration. Take special care if you depend on VPN
connectivity for remote access! Administrative interaction is required:

– Configuration is expected in sub directories now. Move your files
from /etc/openvpn/ to /etc/openvpn/server/ or /etc/openvpn/client/.
– The plugin lookup path has changed. Remove extra plugins/ from relative
paths.
– The systemd unit openvpn@.service was replaced with
openvpn-client@.service and openvpn-server@.service. Restart and
reenable accordingly.

This does not affect the functionality of networkmanager, connman
or qopenvpn.
So keep your Manajro Linux updated and have  fun with Linux.

KaOS 2017.01 released as new year's gift

If you thinking of using a Independent Linux distribution but still want some familiarity with one of the popular distributions, then there is a good news for you. KaOS team released a new version named 2017.01 as new year's gift. KaOS is independent but inspired by Arch and uses Pacman as package management. This distribution uses rolling release pattern and it includes all the latest updates to KDE plasma desktop. This version has KDE frameworks  5.29.0, KDE Applications 16.12.0 & not yet released ports of KDE Applications. It also includes Qt 5.7.1.

KaOS 2017.01 includes it's own ISO to USB tool which gives the option to recover USB after using it for ISO. It is a unique feature which is not offered commonly. KaOS. This version runs on Linux kernel 4.8.15.

Base of the system

Most notable major updates to the base of the system are Boost 1.62.0, ICU 58.2, Ruby 2.4.0, Systemd 232, FFMPEG 3.2, Linux 4.8.15, Mesa 13.0.2, Hunspell 1.6.0, Gpgme 1.8.0, Gstreamer 1.10.2 and a move to Openjpeg 2 (2.1.2)
KaOS repositories no longer provide Qt 4. It is a good three years ago that development for Qt 4 stopped, late 2015 all support including security fixes ended. Any application that has not made the transition to Qt 5 in all this time can no longer be supported in KaOS. Either they actually are no longer maintained or their development is ignoring the implications of building on a possible insecure toolkit.
The Linux kernel has all the needed ucode build-in for a fully automated Early Microcode update.
It is possible for both the Live session and installed system to start a Plasma Wayland session right from the login manager. An X11 session is of course still default, but the drop-down menu has a Wayland entry too. With Plasma 5.8.5, the Wayland session is possible on more systems.
KaOS uses the Systemd provided Systemd-boot for UEFI installs.

Calamares

The used installer framework has moved to the 2.5 series. Highlights of the changes and additions:

  • Improved system requirements configuration checking
  • Fixed a path handling issue which could sometimes occur when reusing an existing EFI system partition
  • Fixed operating system detection for automatic dual boot setup in GRUB
  • Added support for NVME devices to set correct ESP flag with UEFI installs
  • Added Btrfs subvolumes setup for @ and @home in automated install modes (note: manual partitioning still doesn’t support Btrfs subvolumes, as this requires further work in both KPMcore and Calamares)

Known issues:

  • If you do not want to install a bootloader, do not use any of the automated partitioning options, select manual for this. See the bug report for the installer regarding this.
  • If you want to use a GPT partition table on a BIOS system, make sure to set it up following BIOS GPT, the installer’s partitioner can only handle GPT correctly for UEFI
  • Installing on RAID or LVM is currently not possible
  • Hibernate on LUKS enabled swap partitions needs manual intervention, the installer misses some settings to fully support this.
KaOS does not support Rufus or Unetbootin to create bootable flash drive. You have to use SUSE Studio ImageWriter in Windows to create bootable flash drive of KaOS. To create bootable USB in Linux you probably have to use dd feature. To get more information on how to create bootable USB of KaOS refer to this page.

Hello guys, welcome to 13th segment of  "Introduction with Linux Distro". Today we have a Debian based distro as our guest. Devuan Linux is new to the Linux world. It can be a good lightweight option to your current system.
Devuan Linux made it's way into Linux world on November 2014. It is making nice and steady progress from that time. The distro entered beta stage in April 2016. It is based on Debian Jesse. Let's see something about this distro.
        • The Looks : Well, considered looks wise Devuan can be good. It uses Xfce as default desktop environment which gives an advantage to people with old system. Xfce can also be customized to look more interesting. However Devuan also offers KDE as alternate desktop environment.

          Devuan 1.0 Beta 2
        • Compatibility : Devuan Linux is available to 64 bit systems as well as older 32 bit systems too. So people with older systems can be happy too.
        • Strong Base : Devuan is based on Debian 8 Jesse. Debian is veteran player in Linux game. This is an advantage to Devuan Linux to have such an strong base to build on and also utilize Debian's repositories for easier package access.
        • Performance : Even though it is still beta, Devuan 1.0 beta 2 is very stable. There is one interesting thing about Devuan that it is not using Systemd while many other distro using it. Having Xfce desktop environment gives it plenty of lightweight and speed skill boost. It is nicely made and maintained when it comes to performance.
