How to install Desktop Environments in linux?

Hello buddies,
Well we are here again to show you some cool things in Linux world. What are those cool things? Well there are lots but for now we will be telling you about Desktop Environments.

Now we gonna explain you how to install Desktop Environments mentioned in this post. So all we need is PC!!!! and a Linux distro installed in it and network connection plus a little patience if you have slow Internet speed. We will be explaining you how to install these DE in Debian based distros i.e. Ubuntu, Lubuntu, etc. Okay you fire up your PC, establish Internet connection and look below for any of your personal choice :P
  • Gnome - This is the one of the coolest and heaviest DE. so for installing it in Ubuntu, hit ctrl+alt+tab to bring out Terminal. Once you opened terminal, we have to add PPAs to the system. Calm down and just follow the below steps :
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-next
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Once you have done upgrading all you need to do is install Gnome shell. for that you need to type following command in your almighty terminal
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

Now you got the gnome DE in your Ubuntu successfully. But you can also install some specific apps and tools made Gnome
sudo apt-get install gnome-weather gnome-music gnome-maps gnome-documents gnome-boxes gnome-shell-extensions gnome-tweak-tool gnome-clocks

And you are done. Just give it a reboot and while login screen appears you will get an option to choose either unity or Gnome. IF you are lazy enough to do this then you can directly grab the ISO file of Ubuntu Gnome form HERE. We will recommend you to get iso of Ubuntu Gnome instead of using Gnome on top of Unity.

In Fedora and OpensSUSE Gnome DE is already included in ISO file. You will get and option to choose from several DE while installing the distro.

  • KDE - Kde is another eye candy DE, but also very useful and interesting to use. So what we gonna do to get KDE in our Ubuntu system? Simple just fire up your terminal get ready for fun.
First of all PPAs are there so no worries just follow the following guide.
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports -y
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kde-standard kubuntu-desktop

There you successfully installed KDE in your Ubuntu system or Alternatively you can directly get ISO file of Kubuntu (a ubuntu division made with KDE) form HERE.

Again in Fedora and OpenSUSE KDE is included in ISO so you can choose from options while installing.

  • Cinnamon - Here comes another beautiful DE. The new cinnamon 2.0 have lots of new things to show you guys. Bt let's wait up here for few days sir. As new cinnamon 2.2 is released the PPA are still updating and the stable PPA for Trusty Tahr has yet to come out. We seriously don't any harm to PC, so we won't encourage you to install Nightly builds yet. We will update the topic when the stable PPA are added in repository.
  • Mate - Well beautiful things are coming one after another. Here is how you install Mate 1.8 on your Ubuntu system. So fire up your almighty terminal once again.
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://repo.mate-desktop.org/archive/1.8/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs) main"

wget -q http://mirror1.mate-desktop.org/debian/mate-archive-keyring.gpg -O- |

sudo apt-key add -

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install mate-core mate-desktop-environment mate-notification-daemon

After you done the above procedure you are all set to use Mate on your Ubuntu system. Just reboot and choose Mate from your Login screen.

In case you have Fedora Installed with gnome or any other DE you can run following command in terminal.
yum groupinstall mate-desktop

In case you are using OpenSUSE you must follow THIS LINK to get help as it is the recommended way.

  • XFCE - Now let's now on to lightweight era. You can get Xfce easily on your Ubuntu system via terminal. So  just type in below commands
In case you are using OpenSUSE then you can install lxde from Yast. or alternatively by this command
sudo zypper install patterns-openSUSE-lxde

So we hope you will have fun playing with your Linux system. You can also install multiple DE in your single system. So try out new things and experience beauty of Linux. Stay tuned with us as we will be back with more DE and way to install them too, till then Ciao.
